9:10 a.m. Macy’s will shut 11 stores in 9 states (The Joplin Globe)
NEW YORK (AP) — Department-store operator Macy’s Inc. said Thursday it will close 11 underperforming stores in nine states — affecting 960 employees — and lowered its forecast for the fourth quarter after one of the weakest holiday seasons in years. Joplin is not on the list.

As the Flathead Grows, Hitchhiking Numbers Shrink (Flathead Beacon)
Angey LaRoque spent much of her youth hitchhiking across the Flathead Valley from her home in Whitefish. Now she returns the favor as often as she can, picking up locals and travelers whenever there's space in her red Firebird. "It seems like an easy way to help someone out," said LaRoque, who now lives in Olney, "especially if you're going that direction anyway."
